Golden Ale
Our second annual brew of Bumps with Villages Brewery, to celebrate the shop’s 6th birthday.
Bumps is a traditional golden ale brewed with all English ingredients — this year we have combined a heritage malt with modern hop varieties. We selected Chevallier malt for deep bready-marmalade flavours, then Harlequin and Olicana hops for passionfruit, peach & mango notes.
Chevallier was the dominant barley variety in England from the 1820s to the1920s and would have been the main malt used in many Victorian ales. The malt is supplied by Crisp Maltings, whose founders were working with Chevallier back in 1870.
Both hops are from the Charles Faram Hop Development Programme, the aim of which has been to find agronomically sound, exciting new British hop varieties. These new varieties are hybrids of assertive “new world” hops crossed with strong British rootstocks to create something with the best of both worlds.
