Born in 1979, Franz grew up on his parents’ wine estate in central Burgenland, only a few kilometres from the lake, close enough to the wine. In Horitschon he not only learned the art of winemaking from his father, but in doing so also discovered his great passion. After graduating from oenology school in Klosterneuburg, he completed some internships abroad. In 2000, having come closer to wine, he sought the geographic proximity and took over as oenological and organizational director of the Balf estate near Sopron. In doing this, he continued his father´s project, who already in 1997 had bought vineyards in the small village of Balf, close to the Austrian border. Since 2011 he is in charge of the Austrian estate, too. Throughout the 2000s, Franz and his father have done considerable work to rediscover the region’s unique traits and traditions, converting to biodynamics in 2006 to unlock the full potential of all 50ha of vines on either side of the border.
